There is something profoundly significant in the support of friendships. When we have someone or a few trustworthy and beloved someones who know us, have history with us, and have a wish to help us, we are miles ahead of those who don’t.
I was thinking, on my journey to wellness, how much easier it would be to get more motivated to get out if I have a friend who would be willing to go for walks out in the green spaces of the region with me. Then, as I was sitting on my balcony with my first coffee, in the early morning fogginess, pondering the vista of Esquimalt harbour in front of me, that led me to thinking … what about ‘tandem healing’?
Not just the healing of friendships or having a friend badger you to get off your duff and get out with them so you get more physically active, but how about having a friend who also has ‘issues’ that they want to have re-aligned, go into the CEDRIC community and process the literature and workshops together? Of course, it would require the patience needed of the other to give them the time and space to do the work that is individual to each of the friend’s healing process, but doesn’t it make sense that if friendship and camaraderie in a trusted environment is healing, then taking an intentional path together toward wellness would not only expedite the individual healing process through the support available, but wouldn’t that tandem healing also deepen the friendship?
Two eagles fly by me as I write this and I see it as an omen.
Friendship has become a bit of a boondoggle with me lately as I have moved two hours down the Island highway to a new community that affords me very little of the kind of intimate familiarity I’ve previously had when living closer to my established best friends. Now one of my chosen sisters lives in Iqualuit, my brother is spending most of his time on his trimaran in the San Juans, and my other chosen sister is married and a farmer’s wife in Glenora, consumed by the chickens and her job with rural business initiatives. So here I am, new to Victoria, reconnecting with acquaintances I’ve had at a distance over the past few decades, and contemplating the blossoming friendships that are in my future. Which is what got me to thinking that it might be advantageous to have a friend who also has similar issues as myself, who could become involved with CEDRIC philosophy, perhaps taking the upcoming CEDRIC web program with me.
Do you have a friend who might be interested in considering a tandem healing experience with you as you both work together to realign yourselves? Do you have the kind of friend who would be interested in helping you navigate the challenges and rewards of personal growth while allowing you to do the same for them? I think that in order to get to a place in our lives where we are free to live in balance without being influenced by knee jerk responses that send one running to food or other behaviours that are counter productive, we need our friends.
Think about it. I’m going to talk it over with Michelle. I’ve done an internet search on the concept of tandem healing and have found no representation on it at all, no matter how I worded the concept. Perhaps this is something we can explore together, here within the healing parameters of CEDRIC.
And why stop at tandem? How about circles of friends? How about mates? The possibilities are infinite.
What do you think?
